Poetry Slam Winners, Wednesday, April 27th
1st Place ~ Samantha Glasper
2nd Place ~ Fred Perry
3rd Place ~ Shatoni Brown
In honor of National Poetry Month, the Media Center hosted a Phoenix Poetry Slam on Wednesday, April 27, during lunch. The poetry slam was an event where students recited/performed their own original poems in front of an audience and a panel of judges. The top three winners received Visa gift cards ranging from $25 to $100.
Poet, author and Professor Louise McKinney, Georgia Perimeter College, facilitated a poetry slam workshop for Phoenix students on Wednesday, April 20 during lunch. In the workshop, McKinney demonstrated how to “perform” an original poem, offer suggestions on movements/body language, and provided insight on what judges may look for.
The slam guidelines included the following:
The poem must be original and written by the performing student.
The language in the poem must be school appropriate.
A typed copy of the poem must be submitted to the judges.
Thank you for joining us as we celebrated National Poetry Month in April!

More than 1,500 federally supported teaching and learning resources are included from dozens of federal agencies. New sites are added regularly.
FREE was conceived in 1997 by a federal working group in response to a memo from the President. The site was launched a year later. It was redesigned and re-launched for the first time in November 2006.
FREE is maintained by Peter Kickbush and Kirk Winters, Office of Communications and Outreach, with support from the Development Services Team in the Office of the Chief Information Officer, U.S. Department of Education.
FREE is among the most popular K-12 websites maintained by the U.S. Department of Education because of the many great resources being offered by contributing federal agencies.
